Re: Saab at Sardi's > by: <RDMCNARY@aol.com> Bruce and Bob: Your postings about MASCDCS (pronounced "Ma-sid-i-cus" by insiders) sure brings back floods of memories. I've been a card carrying member of the Madison Avenue Sports Car Driving & Chowder Society since around 1960 (the year I was invited to join is lost to history, but I know it was near the close of my first watch with Saab, which ended when I signed on with Volvo in January of '61). There's a lot more. The lovely Anne and I have been friends with Denise McCluggage since several years earlier. Did you know Denise founded of what is now AutoWeek? She launched it from her apartment in New York's Greenwich Village, as a single sheet folded, called Competition Press. It was a natural outgrowth of her several years as a motorsports reporter at the San Francisco Chronicle. She had been a sports writer, and was introduced to the sports cars and racing by Barney Clark at the newspaper, who later became a highly respected copywriter at Campbell Ewald in Detroit on the Chevrolet account, then jumped ship to J. Walter Thompson, NYC, and Ford when FoMoCo embarked on serious motorsports competition in the early '60s. That era saw many successes in FIA rallying, and closed with Ford's finally winning Le Mans with the GT 40s. During those years Denise was respected and successful factory driver for Ford on the international rally scene. Barney also has been a friend since those days, introduced to TLA and me by the great automotive photographer Tom Burnside. These days Denise lives at Taos NM, Barney is now in his 80s, living at Point Reyes Station CA, and Tom lives in Santa Rosa CA. We're in touch from time to time. I think the last time we all were together was to celebrate Barney's 80th birthday a few years ago. I still stay current as a dues-paying member of MASCDCS, but it's been quite a while since I made it back to New York and Sardis for one of the monthly meetings. Finally, we also know Malcolm Pray quite well, and have been guests at his home on a number of occasions over the years. Nice guy. His story also is quite interesting, although all the details have slipped my memory. Back in the late '50s a talented road racer named Harry Blanchard was the Volkswagen dealer in Greenwich CT. As I recall, Malcolm was a salesman, perhaps Sales Manager, at the store. Harry met his demise while racing somewhere to the south, maybe Cuba or perhaps it was someplace in South America. His widow, needing someone to run the business, cut a deal with Malcolm. He never looked back, and of course has been hugely successful over the years. His collection of vintage and rare automobiles is very impressive indeed. Bob Sinclair (the lurker) Santa Barbara CA PS: It's Chasens (not Chasins)

If you're planning a tour be sure you include Cat Rock and Cognewaugh Roads. If you really want to have fun, see if you can stay above 25 mph on either! That was a game we used to play (and lose) in High School. Of course, we didn't have Saabs back then. #7. Shadetree race alignment - from Stefan Vapaa
Top
Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2001 12:28:23 -0400 From: Stefan Vapaa <svapaa@insystems.com> Subject: Shadetree race alignment Last week I performed a shadetree style front-end race alignment on my Sonett. I made my own toe, camber, and caster gauges out of scrap materials and basic shop tools for a total monetary outlay of $00.00 and about an hour of my time. The alignment job itself took me about 2 leisurely hours to perform. Total cost of the whole job including parts and supplies came to $10.92. $10.45 for a handful of used alignment shims. $00.47 for a brand new box of colored chalk. I went from toe-in and positive camber to toe-out and negative camber. The car seems much happier on the autocross course now. I took pictures of how I went about the job and wrote up a narrative of the experience. If you are interested in doing this yourself sometime, it is really a simple procedure to get a decent alignment setup. It might not be laser perfect, and you don't get a spiffy dot-matrix printout to show off to your buddies, but it WORKS and it is CHEAP. Good for the low-to-no budget racer. Here's the URL for my go-fast-in-cars site: http://at-speed.freeservers.com Either click on "Air" in the menu on the left and then on the link to the "Aligning SONEAT" article in the page that comes up OR click on the link in the "What's new..." column on the right. -STEFAN ...ps. if anyone wants to do the trig for me, I'm told we can figure out what the actual degrees of camber and caster I am running are. I never got that far in math and this is the first time since I graduated college that I actually needed or wanted that knowledge.

The car is now owned by a Mr. Neilsen of Munich, Germany. Any help that you can give would be very appreciated. Bruce I have recently bought a Sonett II V4, built in 1969, frame-number 1761. This car has been up to 1989 in the USA, in the San Francisco region. The name of the first owner was probably Bud Johnson, because I found a cap in the car "Bud Johnson Saab Team" and decals at the dashboard with his name and hints to racing activities. The last owner (in Germany) told me, that this car had won American street racing competitions. My question to you is: Does the name Bud Johnson in the context with Saab mean anything to you? If you know anything about him, I would be glad, if you would let me know. Kind regards, Harald Nielsen, Munich, Germany Please send any information that you might have on Bud Johnson directly to Harald Neilsen at:[SMTP:NieMuc@freenet.de]

Date: Mon, 22 Oct 2001 10:17:38 -0400 From: Joshua Pollak <josh@offthehill.org> Subject: Saab's in PC Games A while back someone on the list mentioned the 'Rally Trophy' computer game to soon come out, and wondered if a Saab would be featured. Well, not to string out the agony any longer (yeah right, I'm sure your all deperate to know! ;) But here is the list of cars to be featured in the game (check out #7!) 1) Lancia Fulvia Coupe 1.6 HF 2) Alfa Romeo Gulia GT 3) Fiat 600 Abarth 4) Lancia Stratos 5) Renault Alpine A 110 6) Volvo Amazon 7) Saab 96 V4 8) Opel Kadett Rally Coupe 9) Mini Cooper 1275S 10) Ford Escort MK1 RS 2000 11) Ford Lotus Cortina A few people on the game's message board voiced their opinion that it should be a 2-stroke Saab, but I think this is good enough! :) There is a downloadable demo of the game (if your PC has enough power to run it), featuring the Mini Cooper S. Since the Mini is also front wheel drive, the 'How to Drive' section of the Demo's documentation even suggests and explains how to do left-foot braking and what they call the 'Scandinavian Flick'. Looks like its going to be a pretty fun game: I think I'll need to go buy a wheel for my PC.
